What We Believe

If there’s one statement of Christian belief that best summarizes what Knox holds dear, it would be the Apostles Creed. This creed is an early statement of Christian belief, dating back to the second century, and one that is widely held today by many Christian denominations, including Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, Methodists, Congregationalists and Presbyterians, of which Knox Church is a part.

The Apostles Creed is structured on Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19 to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In a time when most Christians were illiterate, oral repetition of the Apostles Creed, along with the Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments, helped preserve and transmit the faith of the early church.

THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
      creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
      who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
      and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      He descended to hell.
      The third day He rose again from the dead.
      He ascended to heaven
      and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
      From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy catholic church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.
